The mythological leap from nothing to success
I’m starting this next year with nothing. Or almost nothing. Definitely a long, long way from where I visualise my “ideal life” to be. I have stared at this dream constantly for years, wishing to be over there. Like a vast river that I need to cross, I don’t dare to take the leap and splash down inelegantly in the middle, failing not only to fulfil my dream and get to the other side, but also getting soaked and making a fool out of myself in the process.
I’m talking about my business. My dream. My hopes. My passion. I’ve had relative success for the last few years with my wedding photography business, but as I put this on the back-burner for a while to concentrate on my landscape photography, I feel like I’m starting afresh with new goals, new challenges and a whole new river to cross.
I’ve been doing a lot of reading over the last few months, learning how I can really make my dreams a reality this time round. And one thing I’ve learned is that the giant leap isn’t the only way. In fact, I would suggest that it’s not a way at all. I would be surprised if many (or any at all) have reached the other side of their river by leaping. The trick is to find the stepping stones, cross a small step at a time, focussing on where you’re going to place your next foot until one day that next small step is on the distant grassy bank.
So this week I’m creating a plan, working out the series of small steps I can take to get me to where I want to be, to my version of success. To visualise the path that will lead me to my ideal life. So that each stride I take is small enough to be actionable, and to not scare myself with the enormity of the task ahead. So that this time next year I am closer to my dream and not still staring out the window dreaming about how I wish things would be…
So what’s your next small step to get to the ideal life you’ve been dreaming about?
