As someone who has been diagnosed with coeliac disease, I support the charity Coeliac UK where I can. Last year that involved me photographing their Gluten Free Chef of the Year competition. And I was delighted and excited to be asked back again this year too. Again it was judged by the Coeliac UK food ambassador, Phil Vickery.

I met Lucy a couple of years ago when we were both exhibiting at a wedding fair. During a break in visitors, I took a look round and fell in love with her beautiful wedding stationery, and she thought my photos were pretty neat too! So we met up for a coffee and have since become firm friends. She recently totally revamped her Oh So Chic website and asked if I would take some photographs of her stationery and gifts.

Sometimes a shoot can come from a place that’s totally unexpected, or in a seemingly random twist of fate. A year ago, I photographed a London Design Week event at the premises of high end stylish furniture store, Poltrona Frau Group in Clarkenwell, London. If I hadn’t stepped in to photograph that event for my friend at the last minute, then the owner of the store wouldn’t have been impressed with my photography, and he wouldn’t have asked me to photograph his showroom now that it has been updated for the new season.

Haileybury Fashion Show

There’s such a buzz surrounding fashion shows. The backstage hubbub and the show, lights and energy in front. And it was exactly that at the Haileybury Fashion Show that I photographed at the weekend. And who was in the audience, but supermodel Erin O’Connor.

I’ve been privileged to photograph a few weddings recently where the flowers were supplied by Daizy. Janis, the owner, creates beautiful floral arrangements and bouquets. So when she became a preferred supplier at Luton Hoo recently, I was delighted when she asked if I would take some photographs of her flowers for her new brochure for the wedding venue.

Craig Markus is a fashion designer with his own clothing label. His clothes are inspired by urban music, hip hop and street culture, and were worn by the band JLS on X-Factor as well as by premiership footballers and other celebrities. And it just turns out that Craig also lives in the same home town as me. So when he contacted me to ask if I would do a photo shoot of him to use as publicity shots but in an edgy fashion style, of course I jumped at the chance.

I love shooting fashion, particularly on location, as you can be creative in a way that you are not able to in other photo shoots… taking your time to get the perfect shot and appealing to my sense of perfectionism! And Craig had an ideal location in mind – a bridge next to an area of wasteland with fly tipping left in it. Not the most glamorous location, I will admit, especially on a dark, winter evening but perfect for an edgy, urban photo shoot.

A few months ago I was diagnosed with Coeliac disease, which means that when I eat gluten, my own immune system attacks my digestive system. I was very fortunate that I was diagnosed before I got really ill from it. Undiagnosed, I would have just become more and more unwell over time, and many people are ill for months, or even years, before they finally get diagnosed as the symptoms are often mistakenly attributed to irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) instead. Approximately 1 in 100 people in the UK have Coeliac disease although many are undiagnosed. So when the doctor told me that my test result was positive, one of the first things I did was join Coeliac UK. They are a charity which funds research into the disease, generates awareness amongst manufacturers, chefs and the public, and also provides support to its members.

As a photographer, I wanted to additionally support them in a way I know how to – by taking photographs. So I sent them an email and they wrote back telling me about the gluten free chef of the year competition that they were holding, judged by celebrity chef Phil Vickery, who has been a real champion for the cause. So last week we all headed down to the Knorr Kitchen in Leatherhead where there was a 90 minute, 3 course cook-off between the 6 finalists. And I documented the goings-on for them. I can’t tell you how much fun it was. The food all looked amazing too. Such a shame I never got to taste any of it…

Commercial shoot / Event at Poltrona Frau, London

A little while ago I got a call from a photographer friend of mine. He was unable to photograph an event that was happening that evening and asked if I would be able to cover it instead? I had approximately 3 hours to check my equipment, eat some food and head down to Poltrona Frau in London.

Catering was provided by Mise-en-Bouche and not only did the food all look delicious, but it was presented beautifully.
